The government is currently making an effort to promote better health in all public companies, particularly in the food industry. Research coming from of the INSPQ [Institut national de santé publique du Québec (Quebec’s national public health institute)] indicates that obesity costed the government of Quebec $1.5 billion in 2011 which is why more and more people are trying to eat healthier. For this reason, the government has created certain funding initiatives to help reduce high sodium and trans fats from processed foods.
There are financial aid programs in Quebec aimed at improving the quality of production and nutritional labelling on processed foods. The goal of these programs is to find solutions that respond to the dietary needs and concerns of Quebec consumers. The hope is to create a chain reaction: if companies start focusing more on the ingredients in their products, then the government will provide them with support by funding food research and development. This financial aid program has three components, with each offering up to 70% of funding for eligible expenses and a refund up to $150,000.
Eligible projects include:
- External consultant services;
- Developing a healthy food development action plan;
- Training activities for the bio-food industry;
- Conducting clinical studies and developing tools aimed at improving the nutritional quality of foods.
